Set right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, where more than a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas find refuge, Kwitonda’s unrivalled position puts life changing gorilla trekking experiences within easy reach. Each of the eleven luxurious suites features a private heated plunge pool, wellness treatment area, in- and outdoor fireplaces and large timber-framed windows that welcome breathtaking scenery and volcano views inside.

Created in response to its dramatic setting, the luxury lodge includes elements such as woven ceilings and hand-fired terracotta brickwork crafted by local artisans, while a dedicated Conservation Room and on-site nursery and vegetable garden – which provides fresh produce for Kwitonda’s farm-to-table food journey – further enhances the experience. Offering guests a nurturing space within which to contemplate their encounters with the remarkable “gentle giants of the forest”, the lodge envelopes them in a sanctuary of warmth, stillness & solitude.
Trek through lush vegetation to encounter these magnificent, playful primates in their natural habitat. Golden Monkeys are endemic to the region and highly endangered, making this a truly unique experience. You can expect to see up to one hundred monkeys at a time and spend up to an hour observing them. Finding the monkeys typically takes around half an hour, though this may vary.
Permits are required for this experience, and there are no age or group size restrictions.
Boasting breathtaking views of the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes and surrounded by high-altitude forests, the interiors emphasise local design and handcrafted details adorn the carefully planned spaces.

The entire trekking experience is tailored to make the most of every moment – from the pre-trek briefing sessions in the lodge’s Conservation Room the night before, complimentary kit received from the on-site Gear Room, to the morning of the trek.

Once feared to be extinct by the year 2000, mountain gorillas now represent a story of hope, and the conservation successes tied to their survival are a tribute to the dedication and hard work of the boots-on-the-ground protection provided by organisations like the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund – the world’s largest and longest-running organisation dedicated entirely to gorilla conservation.
Their studies of individual gorillas are coupled with people-centred programs aimed at training the next generation of African conservationists – as well as addressing the basic needs of communities who live alongside the gorillas through food and water security, livelihood and education programmes.
