In 2003, Gary Player asked me to run the logistics for his Presidents Cup team at Fancourt. For a week I was responsible for where twelve of the best golfers in the world slept, ate, practised and travelled, and for the hours nobody saw.
That is the standard this journey is built to. Not the luxury — the invisibility. Everything handled before you notice it needed handling.
Eight nights. Five courses. Four to six women. Every major transfer by helicopter, which is the only reason the route works at all — the coastal course, the Winelands, Walker Bay, a Big Five reserve and the Garden Route are not a sensible drive. From the air they are one continuous morning.
WHY THE HELICOPTER
Most golf tours in South Africa lose two days to the N2. This one doesn't. You play a cliff-top course above the Indian Ocean in the afternoon and sleep in the Karoo. You tee off at Fancourt and have lunch in Cape Town.
Time is the thing being bought here, and it is the only thing that cannot be upgraded later.

A non-golfing companion is welcome. The spa, the reserve, the coast and the flying are the journey as much as the fairways are.

Day 1 - Cape Town
Arrival, Cliff‑Side Sanctuary & First Light on the Atlantic
On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you are met at the aircraft door and escorted through a discreet, fast‑track process. Formalities are handled quietly on your behalf before you walk directly to your private helicopter. Moments after take‑off, Cape Town reveals itself below: Table Mountain⟶ , the city bowl and Robben Island in clear view.
Your pilot traces the sculpted Atlantic Seaboard⟶ — beaches, coves and cliffs — before turning toward Tintswalo⟶ , an exclusive coastal sanctuary poised between mountain and ocean on the lower slopes of Chapmans Peak⟶ . You touch down on the property’s helipad and are escorted straight into a private check‑in: no queues, no public spaces, no delays. Your luggage appears in your suite without effort.
The remainder of the day is yours. Settle into your ocean‑front suite, enjoy a restorative spa treatment or simply sit on your terrace with the Atlantic below. A quiet dinner, tailored to your preferences, closes the day in a key of calm, privacy and ease — the perfect opening chapter to your Heli Golf Odyssey.

Day 2 – Cape Peninsula
Coastal Charm, Hidden Fairways & Penguins at Sunset
Day 2 begins with a relaxed breakfast overlooking the Atlantic, the ocean at eye level and your first signature fairway ahead. You lift off from Tintswalo’s helipad for a spectacular coastal circuit around the Cape Peninsula⟶ and Cape of Good Hope⟶ , before crossing to the warmer False Bay side and descending toward a historic club set between mountain and sea.
On arrival, a reserved warm‑up slot awaits, supported by your private caddie. You play 18 holes⟶ on a course known for immaculate conditioning, clear strategy and sweeping views — an elegant introduction to South African championship golf. After your round, a short transfer takes you to an iconic ocean‑front restaurant, literally perched above the sea, for an unhurried lunch with the Atlantic rolling beneath you.
Late afternoon, you visit Boulders Beach⟶ for a private, guided walk among its resident African Penguins⟶ — a playful, unforgettable interlude. As the light softens, your helicopter returns you along the peninsula, routing over the historic Constantia vineyards and low mountain passes before you descend once more to Tintswalo. Your second night is spent in the same suite, with time for spa, terrace drinks or a quiet dinner as the sun sets into the ocean.
Day 3 – The Winelands
Signature Golf in Wine Country, Then Onward to the Whale Coast
After breakfast at Tintswalo, you board your private helicopter and route inland toward the Cape Winelands. Valleys, dams and sculpted mountains give way to a Jack Nicklaus–designed signature course⟶ near Paarl, celebrated for its pristine conditioning, strategic bunkering and strong championship pedigree.
You move directly into a reserved warm‑up with your private caddie and optional club‑fitting. An 18‑hole round follows at a pace that suits your group, with the option of a cellar‑focused lunch or curated wine tasting between nines in a private corner of the clubhouse. Every detail — from pairings to timing — is calibrated to your preferences and energy on the day.
Later, your helicopter is repositioned for the next leg. You lift off over Franschhoek⟶ and Franschhoek Pass, cross Theewaterskloof Dam and the fertile valleys beyond, then turn south toward the coast. You land at a Private Reserve⟶ above Walker Bay, just outside Hermanus⟶. Check‑in is swift and discreet; you are welcomed to your suite with in‑room hospitality and, if desired, a scheduled spa session.
Evening unfolds at your own pace — pool, terrace or a chef‑hosted dinner overlooking the Whale Coast.⟶
Day 4 – Hermanus
Coastal Serenity, Ocean Fairways & Dune‑Top Sundowners
This day opens with the wild beauty of Walker Bay at your feet. After breakfast, a brief helicopter repositioning of around five minutes carries you low along the coastline to a premier coastal estate where 27 holes weave between fynbos, mountain slopes and glimpses of the sea.
On arrival, you proceed directly to a reserved practice area and meet your private caddie team. You may choose a classic 18‑hole round or extend to all 27 holes⟶ , depending on how you wish to balance challenge, photography and leisure. Springbok antelope often graze along or beside the fairways, adding a distinctly African note to the day’s play.
Post‑golf, time is set aside for a tailored spa treatment back at the lodge, followed by an unstructured afternoon for pool, reading or quiet in‑suite time.
As golden hour approaches, a private 4x4 transfers you across the reserve and over coastal dunes to a secluded beach setting for sundowners. Fine spirits, canapés and an unbroken horizon close the day, before you return to the lodge for a four‑course dinner with paired South African wines in a private dining space.
Day 5 – Sanbona Wildlife Reserve
Helicopters, Big Five & Tented Safari Under the Stars
Today, the Odyssey pivots from ocean and vineyards to wilderness and wildlife. After a leisurely breakfast and unhurried check‑out from Hermanus, you board your private helicopter for a scenic inland flight to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve⟶ — one of the Western Cape’s largest private reserves and a rarefied Big Five sanctuary.
Your route traces river valleys and rugged mountain ranges before descending into a vast landscape of plains, koppies and distant escarpments. You touch down near your luxury tented camp, where you’re welcomed and escorted to your tented suite: spacious interiors, fine linens and private decks looking out over the reserve. It is an authentic bush experience with every comfort preserved.
After a light lunch and time at leisure — pool, spa or simple stillness — you meet your ranger and tracker team for your first evening game drive. In an open 4x4, you explore in search of lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and cheetah, alongside diverse plains game and birdlife. At sunset, you pause for classic safari sundowners in the bush, before returning to a lantern‑lit boma dinner under the stars. Stories and quiet conversation carry the night, with the wild beyond your canvas walls.
Day 6 – Sanbona
A Full Day in the Karoo
Coffee arrives at your tent before light, and you leave in the dark. The sun comes up somewhere over the Warmwaterberg while you're already out in it.
Mornings are when the reserve is busiest. Lion move at first light and settle by mid-morning; elephant come down to water before the heat. Your ranger and tracker follow whatever the night left behind. Nothing is scheduled, which is rather the point. Mid-drive you stop for coffee in the open with the engine off — usually the quietest ten minutes of the journey.
Back at camp for a full breakfast, and then the day opens out. A guided walk with your ranger if you'd like one, conditions permitting. Otherwise the middle of the day is yours: the pool, the spa, the deck of your tented suite, a book, or nothing at all. On a journey built around movement, this is the one afternoon with nowhere to be. Most guests find it is the part they remember.
Late afternoon you go out again into the best light of the day, with sundowners taken wherever the evening suggests. Then dinner in the boma, lantern-lit, under a sky with nothing beneath it.
Second night in the same suite. Nothing to pack.

Day 7 – Sanbona to Garden Route
Sunrise in the Bush, Cliff‑Top Golf Above the Indian Ocean
You begin before dawn with a gentle wake‑up call and coffee in your tent. You depart on a sunrise game drive, the bush at its most active and atmospheric. With luck, this completes your personal Big Five sightings; with certainty, it deepens your sense of place. Mid‑drive, you pause for a coffee stop in the bush — a simple, grounding moment in the open air.
Back at camp, a full breakfast awaits. Guests may then choose a guided bush walk with the ranger (conditions permitting), for a close‑up look at tracks, plants and smaller details of the ecosystem, or a slow morning at leisure — by the pool, at the spa or on the deck of your tented suite.
Late morning, you board your helicopter once more and lift out of the reserve, routing south‑east toward the famed Garden Route. Landscapes soften from scrub to farmland and then to forest and coastline, before you descend near a signature cliff‑top course high above the Indian Ocean.
After a reserved warm‑up, you play 18 holes⟶ on a layout renowned for dramatic carries, cliff‑edge greens and uninterrupted sea views. As evening falls, you transfer to your Garden Route accommodation for dinner and a quiet night overlooking the coast.
The same meticulous, invisible orchestration now underpins your evening. On arrival by helicopter at the historical Manor House⟶, you are escorted to a private check‑in where formalities are handled quietly and efficiently. Your tee time at The Links, Fancourt’s iconic links‑style course, for the following day will then be pre‑secured under limited‑access allocation.
Day 8 – Fancourt
The Legendary Links & Garden Route Grandeur
After breakfast, its time for the Links⟶ - the flagship golf course and host of the 2003 Presidents Cup. John Sparks, founder of Visitors to Africa, was personally employed and entrusted by Captain Gary Player, then world Presidents Cup team captain, to oversee and orchestrate the team’s logistics that week — a singular honour inside the inner circle of the game.
After a structured warm‑up and concise course briefing, you walk in legendary footsteps over 18 holes modelled on the great courses of Ballybunion and St Andrews: dramatic dunes, sculpted fairways and complex greens.
On‑course refreshments and halfway catering are curated to your preferences. The remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy Fancourt’s spa, practice facilities and dining, with every detail calibrated to your comfort.

Day 9 – Cape Town
Private Diamonds, Couture & the City at Her Command
After a late breakfast, you board your private helicopter for a direct flight back to Cape Town. Routing along the Garden Route and over the Winelands, you return to the city with a final aerial sweep of mountains, vineyards and coastline before landing at a private facility. A seamless transfer brings you to your Boutique Hotel⟶ overlooking the atlantic ocean, chosen for its privacy, views and refined service.
Early afternoon, you step by appointment into an exclusive diamond and jewellery atelier — a private workshop not open to the general public. Senior Gemmologists and designers introduce you to off‑market stones, rare cuts and bespoke pieces, with the opportunity to commission or acquire unique creations that will never appear in mainstream retail. The environment is quiet, informed and unhurried.
The afternoon becomes a curated shopping and style experience, tailored to your interests: fashion, design, art or lifestyle. A dedicated stylist or concierge can accompany you, or you may prefer to browse privately with discreet support on call.
As evening falls, you gather for a final dinner in a private setting — perhaps a rooftop with Table Mountain silhouetted at dusk or a chef’s‑table experience — closing the Odyssey in a mood of reflection and quiet celebration.
Day 10 – Farewell & Departure
A Calm Return, with Africa Still in Her Blood
Your final morning is intentionally gentle. A leisurely breakfast allows time to savour the last views of Cape Town, complete any final packing and reflect on a journey that has moved from ocean cliffs and wine estates to wild bush, legendary fairways and private ateliers. Check‑out is handled discreetly on your behalf.
At the agreed time, a private transfer collects you from the hotel and delivers you to Cape Town International Airport, where you are met and escorted through a fast‑track departure process. Formalities are kept to a minimum, preserving the same sense of ease and discretion with which you arrived.
You depart with more than photographs and purchases. After your return home, you receive a bespoke, hard‑bound coffee‑table book documenting your Heli Golf Odyssey — routes flown, fairways walked, wildlife encountered, moments shared.
