Ten days on one coastline, across a hundred thousand years

San, Stone Cities & the Clash for Southern Africa’s Soul

The idea

There is a rock on the West Coast where a woman walked across wet sand a hundred and seventeen thousand years ago. In 1969 someone photographed me standing in front of it, thirty years before anyone knew what was beside it.

The footprint itself is in Cape Town now, lifted and taken to the museum. There's a replica where it lay. You will see both — the original behind glass in the city, and the place it came from, where there is nothing to look at but the ground and the light on it.

That is the whole journey in one pairing: the thing, and the place the thing is from.

Ten days on a single stretch of coastline, working forward through its layers. A cave above Walker Bay where people sheltered seventy thousand years ago. Robben Island before it was famous, back to the Khoisan prisoners. A Constantia wine cellar and the ledgers kept in it. A Stellenbosch estate my great-grandfather bought in 1928, whose name is still on the bottle. And my own six thousand days, which are the shallowest layer here by some margin.

Everywhere else sells you a country. This is one coastline, read properly.

Why this one is hard to arrange

Because it isn't a route. It's a set of back roads, farm gates and people, and I am the only one holding all of them at once.

I was born on that coast. I grew up on the edge of a Constantia wine farm and I can still walk the gravel road through the vineyards with the man who ran it as a boy. My great-grandfather's estate is forty minutes from there. Last September I did something worth writing about every single day and wrote it down that night — thirty days, thirty chapters, across the whole of Southern Africa. I could have built this journey anywhere on that map. I built it here.

None of that is a qualification. It is simply the reason the gates open, and why the people on the other side of them have time for you.

How it moves

Day 1 · From the air and the water
The Two Oceans helicopter flight: Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles, Chapman's Peak from above. The footprint itself, under glass at the museum. Then Robben Island by private boat, told from the beginning rather than from 1964. Lunch at anchor off Clifton coming home.

Day 2 · The Peninsula
Hout Bay and a private boat out to Seal Island. Chapman's Peak Drive, then Noordhoek. Mussels pulled off the rocks at Misty Cliffs if the tide allows. Penguins at Boulders, and dinner in Kalk Bay where the locals eat.

Day 3 · The mountain
Platteklip Gorge on foot to the summit, cable car down. Kirstenbosch in the afternoon, and the question of which of those plants were taken and where they went. Lion's Head at sunset.

Day 4 · Constantia
The gravel road through the vineyards, walked with the man who ran the farm as a boy. The old cellar and what is written in its ledgers. Bo-Kaap in the afternoon, cooking with a woman whose recipes have come down four generations, then eating what you've made.

Day 5 · The West Coast
North at first light to Kraalbaai and the lagoon. Churchhaven, which most Capetonians know only as a rumour. Then the rock — the replica where the footprint lay, the empty ground around it, and a photograph from 1969 of a boy standing in the same place, thirty years too early to know.

Day 6 · Stellenbosch
The estate my great-grandfather bought and renamed in 1928. The vines, the cellar, the name on the bottle, and lunch under the oaks. The only day of this journey I can't be objective about.

Days 7–8 · Walker Bay
The cave above the shore, seventy thousand years old. Southern right whales from the cliff, in season. Horses into the Atlantic at first light — bareback, into the surf, and a swim with them. A dune drive to a beach nobody else reaches, for sundowners.

Day 9 · Yours
Paragliding off Signal Hill if the wind is right, shark diving at Gansbaai if the sea is, or a second run at whatever held you.

Day 10 · Home
A chronicle of the ten days follows some weeks later.

The full day-by-day is available on request.

Who it's for

Two to six people. Couples, families with older children, friends who have been to Africa before and found it thin.

It suits people who would rather understand one place than glimpse six. There is walking most days, none of it difficult, and at least one early start you'll be glad of afterwards.

It won't suit anyone whose first question is where the Big Five are. They aren't here. This coastline can be joined to a reserve afterwards, and often is — but the journey holds together because of what it leaves out.

What it isn't

It isn't a history tour. Nobody lectures you. The past is simply where you're standing, and someone tells you about it while you're there.

And it isn't restful in the spa sense. You will walk, climb, fly, ride and swim. You'll also have long lunches with nothing scheduled after them.

You won't find a price on this page, in the brochure, or anywhere else.

Every one of these is built around specific people at a specific moment. The same ten days are a different journey for a couple and for a family of five. A single "from USD X" would be fiction.
